THE FINAL CHAPTERS | 1986-1990

The first nine years of the band were relentless, hundreds of dates each year, six records and countless tours of the US, Canada and Europe, were to take place before the years and the road would finally begin to take their toll. After a European tour in 1984, Bob Hardy had reached road capacity. After the writing and recording the last record, Swimming in a Human Ocean, and a fall and winter tour, Eric Odell turned in his mic, and Matt Spransy, his wife Siv expecting their fifth child, said goodbye to the road as well. Bruce Wright left the band in 1986 to return to Victoria as did David Holmes. Rob and Lori Martens followed suit the next year.

Sandie and Owen, having relocated the band to Cincinnati Ohio, remained for three more years through the winter of 1990. The other members of the band now gone, we attempted to continue the band trying several other hands. These were good folks: Tim Spransy, Matt's brother, who had helped on the road crew, now played lead guitar during 1986 and the first half of 1987; Tim McAllister, a muscian, songwriter and producer, played lead guitar the fall of 1987. Sam (Evan) Evans, beat the drums and made us laugh for several years, 1986-1988, and Randy Brown contibuted wonderful keyboards and a grateful spirit from 1986 through 1989. Eventually we added new members Ric Hordinski (on lead guitar), and then Linford Detweiler (bass and occasional keyboards) and Brian Kelley (drums) 1988-1990. This final configuration of Servant lasted almost two years, including several tours of Australia and New Zealand. The reconfigured band recorded half a dozen songs, but with no future albums, it became obvious that Servant’s season was done. The three newest members of Servant went on with Karin Berquist to become the band Over the Rhine, named after an impoverished Cincinnati neighborhood.
